Mystery Shopping FAQs for Clients
What is Mystery Shopping – and what value does it provide?
Mystery Shopping is a widely used research method employed by businesses, wherein an individual assumes the role of a genuine customer. Mystery Shops are often recorded, and can be conducted without restriction in 38 states, and the other 12 states may require a release from the sales agent. Nevada requires Mystery Shoppers to work through a licensed private investigator. The Mystery Shopper typically initiates an inquiry with a target business and occasionally even engages in a transaction. Although the target business is often the one commissioning the assignment, this is not always the case.
Following the assignment, the Mystery Shopper provides a report detailing their experience and the relevant information acquired during the assignment. This feedback and information are then relayed to the client, which utilizes it to improve business performance.
If the inquiry is directed towards the client’s own business, the report assists in comprehending customer experiences and enhancing customer satisfaction, as well as improving sales effectiveness and ensuring regulatory compliance, where applicable. The feedback is implemented in various ways, such as modifying products or services, providing staff training, or refining systems and processes.
In the case of an inquiry made to a competitor (or a business of interest to the client for other reasons), the report contains valuable information for the client organization. This will generally include details about products and services, operations, sales techniques, and customer service.
Mystery Shopping reports aim to maintain objectivity, balance, and sufficient detail in the information provided.
What types of organizations and businesses can it work for?
It is almost endless! People normally imagine hospitality, supermarkets, fashion and other retail shops, but Mystery Shopping is also used by professional and business-to-business service providers, for travel and transport operators, local authority services, education providers, optical care, tourism, automotive sales and service, property sales, elder care, events, experiences, amusement parks, attractions, and in many other settings.
The New Home Industry was one of the first to use Mystery Shops because of the huge investment they make to market their communities. Builders spend millions to upgrade, decorate and landscape model homes. Many sales trainers specialize in real estate marketing and cost a pretty penny as consultants. New home builders use Mystery Shops regularly to make sure they are getting an acceptable return on their investment.
Aren’t there better alternatives to mystery shopping?
- Analytics Platforms: Use to track website traffic, conversion rates, and revenue generated from specific sources.
- UTM Parameters: Tag all marketing links with UTM codes to see exactly which ad, email, or social post led to a sale.
- Heatmaps and Session Recording: Tools allow you to watch recordings of real users navigating your website to identify where they drop off in the sales funnel.
- CRM Integration: Use a CRM like Salesforce to track a lead from their first click to the final closed deal.
Great marketing brings them in; great salespeople close the deal. Our New Home Mystery Shops bridge that gap, providing a foundational audit of the on-site experience to ensure no lead is left behind.”
How are the various mystery shopping companies different from each other?
Thanks for asking!
There are tangible differences in terms of service features and capabilities – literally what the companies can offer, in terms of types and volumes of interactions, and how these are handled, and the reporting output they can provide. The larger Mystery Shopping companies require their clients pay a substantial set-up fee. Nevada shops require the supervision of a licensed private investigator.
Different companies set different standards in terms of interaction quality (and realism), adherence to client briefs, and the accuracy of individual reports. Some shop companies do thousands of shops in a month (retail) and some have a specialty (like us). Companies will also differ in terms of their standards of account management, flexibility and responsiveness. Reporting systems and capabilities will also vary, along with levels of engagement, and the support that they offer to clients on a strategic level.
